Nearly 125 million people currently live in poverty in the European Union, which is nearly twenty-five percent of the population. In Lithuania, about one million people are counted among the poor, which is just under one third of the country's population. Of all the countries in the European Union, this puts Lithuania in fifth place in terms of poverty, with just a little more of the population in poverty than Hungary, and somewhat less than Greece and Latvia. Romania and Bulgaria have the greatest percentage of poor in the EU, with just over forty percent and nearly fifty percent, respectively. The countries with the lowest percentage of people in poverty are Iceland with only just under thirteen percent, Norway with only about fourteen percent, and the Czech Republic and the Netherlands with only fifteen percent.
