Lithuania's Constitutional Court has declared that there can be no such amendments to the Lithuanian Constitution that would go against requirements for membership in the European Union, because that would be itself unconstitutional. Following this decision, member of the Central Electoral Commission and conservative Valdas Benkunskas said that the organization of the referendum on the ban of the sale of Lithuanian land to foreigners should be stopped immediately. However, it is being initiated not only on the land issue, but also to reduce signatures required to call a referendum to one hundred thousand. The Constitutional Court has not yet decided that the latter question is unconstitutional.
