Though few had any doubt that she would do so, President Grybauskaite yesterday announced her intention to run for a second term in the coming presidential election and said that she would continue the fight against those who intend to destroy Lithuania. She also said that as Lithuania recovers, plundering and destructive forces from both outside and inside have become more active. She summed it up, saying, that new forms of oligarchy are breaking up and sharing Lithuania and pushing away everybody’s hopes for a better life.

The President's speech did not escape the scrutiny of Minister of Health Vytenis Povilas Andriukaitis. He said that he, as a historian, would like to look back to the times when a communist party secretary would come to any factory to voice comments on problems and everybody would immediately start fixing them and that is what he sees today.

The minister did not hide that he was surprised at Ms. Grybauskaite’s intention to participate in the election, as well as accompanying rhetoric about the recovering economy and more active internal and external enemies. He summed up his opinion, saying that he remembers being taught the history of the SSSR, when similar things were found in textbooks – for example, that socialism was becoming stronger and developing, but that internal enemies did not sleep and needed to be disposed of. He joked that it turns out those classics of the times of Marx and Lenin are timeless.
