The Leader of the Lithuanian parliament has suggested that only those cases when the spread of false information about another person could defame and humiliate the person or undermine confidence in him, such as claiming he committed a crime, should be considered a misdemeanor. In her view, the adoption of the proposed rules would better protect freedom of self-expression, and unjustified personal prosecution would be avoided. If the amendments to the criminal code proposed by Ms. Graužinienė were adopted, Viktor Uspaskich, who has been accused of contempt of court, and Neringa Venckiene might be able to avoid further legal trouble.
