Leader of the Parliament Loreta Graužinienė says that Lithuania has supposedly exhausted all possible means of doing so and thus can no longer restrict the sale of land to foreign nationals , and, by trying to stop this process , the country might experience serious legal consequences.
The Leader of the Parliament commented to Laisvoji banga (Eng. Free Wave) radio on the attempts to hold a referendum against selling Lithuanian land to foreigners.
“If the referendum took place, we would find ourselves in quite an awkward situation in a legal sense, because there are already commitments to the European Union. We really will not be able to change them, because it would be extremely complicated to make changes with all of the countries. As long as we were able to maneuver -- that is, had an exception to the law -- we did, but those resources are exhausted, " the leader said.
"I have a feeling that people might say that we do not need to sell land to foreigners, but we will not have the legal leverage and arguments to do that,” she asserted.
She concluded that "politicians must explain to the people what legal consequences would await Lithuania in such a case.”
