Starting the beginning of January Lithuania is the first among the Baltic States to become one of ten temporary members of the UN Security Council for a period of two years, and during that period the country will lead the institution two times. International law gives the UN Security Council the greatest power in the world in the area of security and peacekeeping. Therefore, as the most important Lithuanian leaders have stated, participation in its work is an honor and a new challenge, and thus a great opportunity to increase the country's visibility and role in the international arena.
