The two heads of state discussed Latvia's experience in joining the euro zone. At the same time, Dalia Grybauskaite reminded the Latvian leader that there are fifteen Baltic projects on the list of the European Union's strategic energy projects and noted that faster implementation of these projects and of the Third EU Energy Package will not only increase the energy security of the region, but will also ensure competition and lower prices for consumers. As to the Rail Baltica project, the Lithuanian President stressed that a modern contemporary railway should connect all three of the Baltic capitals, without exception. This last point has been a point of contention between the partners in the Rail Baltica project, since Kaunas and not Vilnius is the major Lithuanian city on the line in the original plan.
