Two Lithuanian politicians associated with the country's Order and Justice party – Petras Gražulis and Andrius Mazuronis – have put forward amendments to Lithuania's criminal code that would allow a term of imprisonment of up to life for those who murder by torture or other cruel methods. The criminal code of Lithuania currently establishes that criminals be imprisoned from five to twenty years but only in exceptional cases for life.
Mr. Gražulis stated, "In the past I have sought to establish the death penalty in exceptional cases, but according to the Legal Department of the Chancellery of the Lithuanian Parliament, this is contrary to the Constitution of the Republic of Lithuania and the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms, and so the Legal Department prevented the registration of this proposed law. So, I am proposing amendments to the Lithuanian criminal code to prevent violent murderers getting out of prison after 5 or 8 years."
