On the 12th to 15th of November, meetings of the Commission of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania and Lithuanian World Community will be held at the Lithuanian Parliament .
The Commission will examine the development of civil spirit and nationality in Lithuania and abroad, citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania, introduction of a separate political division for citizens residing abroad, business development, and other issues.
The Commission of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania and Lithuanian World Community was formed on the 14th of March by a resolution of the Lithuanian Parliament. The Commission consists of 20 members -- ten members by proportional representation of parliamentary fractions and ten representatives elected by the Board of the World Lithuanian Community from candidates delegated by Lithuanian communities abroad.
The purpose of the commission is to promote cooperation of Lithuanians living in Lithuania and foreign countries, to take care of mutual assistance and support, exchange scientific, cultural and other information and to provide the Lithuanian Parliament and other state institutions suggestions that would help to strengthen statehood and nurture democratic traditions.
Member of the Parliament Ona Valiukevičiūtė and Jonas Prunskis, elected by the World Lithuanian Community representatives, will chair the Commission.

On the related issue of citizenship for Lithuanians living abroad who have gained the citizenship of another country or for ethnic Lithuanians who hold alternative citizenship, leader of the Lithuanian Parliament Loreta Graužinienė has said that all ethnic Lithuanians should be given Lithuanian citizenship. She claimed that though it would be very difficult to do legally, it should be the goal. She especially commented on the importance of Lithuanians everywhere being joined in the process of protecting what it is to be Lithuanian, and mentioned that it is not enough to just be told to “speak Lithuanian” but rather that it is important to inject the love of the Lithuanian language and Lithuanians into those of Lithuanina ethnicity from early childhood.
