Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is coming to Lithuania. This is the first visit of the current Palestinian leader to Lithuania. The visiting leader will meet with President Dalia Grybauskaite. The Lithuanian president and President Mahmoud Abbas will discuss bilateral relations between Lithuania and Palestine, Palestinian co-operation with the EU, and the Middle East peace process and the situation in the region.
"Lithuania and the EU support the Middle East peace process and renewed Israeli-Palestinian negotiations," the President's Office says. According to Dalia Grybauskaite, the stability of the whole region depends on the successful completion of negotiations. The President additionally stated that Lithuania also supports democratic processes and the development of civil society in Palestine and is contributing to developing various training projects, as well as training the NGO sector. "By participating in the EU and the United Nations developmental cooperation programs, Lithuania provides financial assistance in resolving the issues of Palestinian refugees and humanitarian concerns," the President's press release says.
Mahmoud Abbas will also meet with Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius.
