Dainius Pavalkis, the Minister of Education and a member of the Lithuanian Labour Party, has announced that next year graduating students of ethnic minority language schools will take the same state Lithuanian language and literature exam as those of Lithuanian language schools.
Proponents of the policy say that all residents of the country should be equally proficient in the state language -- Lithuanian, and so this exam tests equally for all, while opponents counter that this proves a disadvantage for people with different native languages and thus may violate EU policy on ethnic minorities.
