Lithuania's opposition has calculated that there are twenty percent more political appointees in ministries than during the term of the previous government. There were seventy-eight vice ministers and advisers during the previous government's term, and now there are ninety-four. The Ministry of Justice, headed by Social Democrat Juozas Bernatonis, experienced the largest amount of growth in political appointees. However, the minister explained that limits on the number of staff and salary expenditures have not been exceeded, and, in fact, the salaries of the political team have been reduced and taxpayer money is being used more efficiently. The opposition is considering amendments to curb the growth of the bureaucracy.
