An elderly woman from a small Lithuanian town named Švėkšna who wanted to add a bit of money to her pension decided to sell about four kilograms of tomatoes she had grown in her greenhouse. After earning twelve Litas, the woman was soon after forced to spend ninety-two Litas because of the sale of those tomatoes. The police officer that caught the elderly woman selling the tomatoes decided that she had to have a business licence, and thus she had to follow the whole procedure of procuring one.
After the newspaper Šilutės žinios (Eng. News from Šilutė) began looking into the case, one mistake after another that was made by the police officer started showing up – the elderly woman was penalized based on an invalid decision of the Šilutė District Municipal Council, and according to specialists of the State Tax Inspectorate, when selling your own vegetables, a person does not even have to have a business licence.
