The Klaipeda district court has acquitted the Chechen couple Malik and Khadizhat Gataeva for the arbitrariness of using psychological abuse. The case against the Gataevas, who took about 150 Chechen war orphans into their family, was begun by the Lithuanian State Security Department (SSD) and the Office of the Prosecutor. In 2009 the couple was convicted, but the verdict was overturned by the Lithuanian Supreme Court for flagrant violations found and sent back for re-examination. The Gataeva's foster children testified that the SSD forced them to testify against their foster parents, and their accuser was a young woman who was SSD Officer Donatas Šumskis's lover. After the Gataevas departure to Finland in the spring of 2012, Finland granted them political asylum.
