Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevicius said that the organizers of the referendum on the ban of the sale of land to foreigners are not revealing all information of the consequences to the Lithuanian public. According to him, if a referendum is held and voted for, it may be required to repay funds previously allocated for Lithuanian agriculture. He explained that the consequences are quite plain and that the Lithuanian agricultural sector has already received about 25 billion litas to date. And though he continued that he is not one hundred percent certain, he claims to be aware that discussions were held at the level of finance ministers in the Ecofin Council and that repayment of those funds would be required and that any prospect for continued funds would be suspended.
According to the prime minister, it is made clear that any country joining the EU is committed to the agreement that no constitutional amendment can be accepted in order to shirk the country's obligations to the European Union.
