The Bank of Lithuania has prepared a bill for the adoption of the euro in Lithuania and the Ministry of Finance has provided it for discussion with institutions and society at large. In the bill it is established that the Bank of Lithuania will exchange litas for euros for free for an unlimited time, while commercial banks will do so for half a year and the Lithuanian postal service will do so for sixty days after the adoption of the euro. It will be possible to pay with the litas for fifteen days after the adoption of the euro. Economists predict that Lithuania will meet Maastricht criteria sometime this year and next year will be able to join the euro zone.
